Grant Writer for Hire

I work with non-profits as a grants manager, on a consulting basis:

*    I research funding sources.

*    I write letters of inquiry.

*    I interview personnel to create and write grant proposals.

*    I write grant implementation plans and reports.

*    I manage ongoing relationships with funders.

*    I track deadlines and requirements for grants from private foundations and government agencies.

*    I get to know your mission so that I can help plan projects and take advantage of funding opportunities.

Photo of Madeleine KahnI strongly believe that a successful grant proposal is one that tells a compelling story. The stronger your narrative about the need, the problem, and your solution to it, the more likely you are to get funded. Writing those compelling narratives and fitting them to the requirements of a specific granting institution is what I do best. All of my experience as a teacher and writer comes to bear on helping you to refine your project and explain your mission.

I am an efficient writer of elegant case statements, grant applications, implementation plans, and reports. I work primarily with small non-profits, schools and colleges, community and public health organizations, and environmental and green technology consultants. I also routinely write and edit grants and articles for individual researchers in the sciences. Making use of my background as a Professor of English, I lead grant-writing and business-writing workshops -- most recently for community health clinics and public health researchers.

As you'll see from this site, I had a nearly 20-year detour into academia. I taught writing, English literature, and women's studies at Mills College in Oakland, all while writing books and articles of my own. This has made me a skilled facilitator of meetings, a resourceful and tenacious researcher, and an expert at providing clear and organized explanations of complex topics.

I'm hoping we can find a way to work together.

You should know that my fee schedule is structured a bit differently from that of most people in the business. Most notably, I don't charge for meeting time. I have found that both parties end up more satisfied if I give my clients ample time to explain what they need -- without worrying about the clock ticking. Not charging for meetings makes those meetings more collaborative. That, in turn, lets me be a more efficient writer and editor. When I know in detail what you need, what tone to create, and what audience I'm writing for, then I'm more likely to get your project right the first time.
